Botched cracker disposal triggers mushroom cloud

Police in North 24 Parganas’ Naihati botched up an attempt to dispose of a huge cache of explosive material seized from illegal units in the belt to set off a huge explosion that damaged homes in the area and triggered panic in the town. Angered by the incident, a mob set fire to two cop vehicles. The intensity of the blast that released a mushroom-like plume of smoke was felt even 1-km away in Chinsurah across the river. Barrackpore Commissionerate has instituted an inquiry.
