
Beams or girders that propped up the deck of the Majerhat bridge weakened over time and buckled on Tuesday, leading to its collapse, forensic experts and engineers said on Wednesday. But that was what broke the bridge’s back; behind this “immediate cause” was a mix of years of inertia, red tape and “ill-informed and superficial” efforts to paper over surface defects, they added.
